New Japanese Car Sales
Latest JADA Monthly Data
Government front-loading of demand with subsidies arrives to haunt September car sales.
The Japan Automobile Dealers Association (JADA) data for new passenger car sales for September 2010 show that total passenger car sales including small cars were 278,283 units, down 5.4% YoY, marking the first decrease in the past 15 months. Overall sales of all types of automobiles declined 3.2% MoM, marking the first decrease during the past 14 months.
Ever since the Japanese government introduced a state subsidy program for eco-friendly vehicles in April last year, car sales bloomed continually for the past 11 months. A previous subsidy program ended in March 2010. As the end of the second subsidy period approached car buyers rushed to dealers to buy cars in August. Predictably, with no incentives in place for September, sales plummeted. The car industry's new problem is how to stimulate sales anew.
