Curry Powder Market

House Curry has  highest recognition rate;  Ebara Curry Flakes gets the re-purchase nod.

Japanese-style curry rice - a popular meal in Japanese households

JMR recently surveyed the popular Japanese curry powder market.  Curry powder is  the fastest and most convenient way to make curry sauce at home.  In the January 2010  more than 1000 people were surveyed, a population representative sample, balanced for gender and ages 16 to 69 years old.   One section of the survey asked the following: "Which of these curry powder brands do you know?" (Recognition), "Which of these curry powder brands have you purchased before?" (Action), and "Which of these curry powder brands would  you purchased based on your previous experience?" (Intention).
Curry roots traced to Imperial Navy

Japan's discovery of curry rice is traced to the British Navy. Admiral Togo, the "Nelson of Japan," encountered while attending naval school in the U.K. in the mid 1800's.  He made it a mainstay in the Japanese Navy and the package shown here is of a curry rice mix product still made today in the city of Yokosuka, site of the restored "Mikasa" battleship, flag ship of Japan during the Japan-Russo War (1904-1905).

House Curry  remains the best-known,  most-purchased brand

An overwhelming majority of the participants knew the products of House Curry Corp., whose products held the top 3 ranked positions.  House Vermont Curry was recognized by 4 out of 5 consumers. Next in recognition levels were products from S&B Corp., a condiments makers,  and Ezaki Glico Corp., a company known for its candies and sweets.   In terms of actual purchases, House held the top 3 positions.    S&B's Golden Curry and Glico's "2-dan Juku Curry" (double simmered curry)  also made the top 5 list.  In contrast, participants' intention to buy curry powder based on recent past  experience differ  greatly.  Nearly  70% intend to  re-purchased Ebara's Yokohama Curry Flakes, followed by a tie for second place between  House's Kokumaru ("rich round flavor)  Curry and the premium curry brand of Japanese convenience retailer 7-Eleven.
