In area Japan is comparable to California; but the 127 million residents of the land of the rising sun are crowded into just 13% of the total land mass, due to the rocky landscape of much of an island formed by volcanic activity.
Population density here is 327 souls per sq. km on average and double that figure in the core metro areas.  Compare that to the U.S. with a mere 27 person per sq /km  or even the billions of China arrayed in relative solitude at just 127 person  per sq/km.
